From a difficult passage to a repeatable routine

How to set an automatic tempo increase

In the app’s Settings, open Gradual tempo increase. This is the Tempo Trainer. Choose a start tempo where the passage feels controlled and a target above it.

  1. Set the two tempos

For this example, use Start tempo 60 BPM and Target tempo 80 BPM. Pick a short passage you can repeat without losing your place.

  2. Choose the step

Set Increase by to 4 BPM and Every to 16 beats. The interval counts the main beats, not subdivision clicks or bars.

  3. Start the trainer

Press Start in the trainer. Keep the passage moving through each increase. When it reaches 80 BPM, the metronome stays there until you stop it.

Use a smaller increase or a longer beat interval if the next step feels rushed. The trainer follows your settings; it does not listen for mistakes or decide when you are ready to speed up.

Give each tempo enough time

Sixteen beats is only an example. A short scale might fit neatly into that interval; a longer phrase may need several repetitions before the next increase.

If your hands tighten or the notes become uneven, stop and choose a slower starting point. Repeating a clean version matters more than reaching the target on the first run.

For a fuller routine, read how to practice scales with a metronome or the piano practice guide.

Keep the pulse clear

At slower tempos, audible subdivisions can help you place notes between the main beats. The trainer’s interval still counts main beats.

For example, 16 beats is four bars in 4/4, but it is not four bars in 3/4. Choose the beat interval to fit the phrase you are practicing.

A steady beat is free

Automatic tempo increases, selectable subdivisions and rhythm patterns, and unlimited Tap Tempo uses are Pro features in the native apps. The free browser metronome has a steady beat and Tap Tempo; it does not include Tempo Trainer.

Tempo Trainer questions

Does the trainer increase tempo every bar?

The Every setting is measured in beats. For an increase every four bars of 4/4, choose 16 beats. In 3/4, four bars is 12 beats.

What happens at the target tempo?

The increases stop, and the metronome continues playing at the target BPM. It does not automatically stop, return to the starting tempo or begin another ramp.

Can I use Tempo Trainer in my browser?

Tempo Trainer is available with Pro in the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android apps. The browser tool supports a steady tempo and Tap Tempo, with manual tempo adjustments.

Does it check whether I played correctly?

No. Tempo Trainer increases BPM after the number of beats you select. Stop and adjust the plan if the passage stops feeling controlled.
